Do Androids Sleep with Electric Blankies?
I’m still digesting last night’s episode of Lost, and I may have something to say about it by the weekend.
But today, I’d like to introduce you to The Only Robot in Third Grade.
Like the previous Cowboy Chris piece, I created this in the first half of 2000 as a sort of test.
The Only Robot In Third Grade (Teaser) from John Cabrera on Vimeo.
This little thing inspired us to write and produce the full pilot webisode later that year. My hope is to have that ready to show you all by the end of this month.

Aww Poor Robot!! =(
“I can hardly wait” to see the rest.
(in my defense, yes I am aware of how cheesy that was)

The robot wore glasses? Is this really a way for you to reveal the pain of your first day at school on 3rd grade? Hmmm?
I hope his inventor was a former Nazi rocket scientist and the robot is made from old V2 parts! That would be awesome!

Wow… this has the potential to be not only cute and funny… but sad in the way the movie “The Red Balloon” was.
Looking forward to more.

Nice! A little historical setting for desegregation in public schools. Black and white “film” (keen, even if unintentional).
Also, this (too) short vid manages to capture that HUGE fear of the unknown that ALL of us had at the start of each new school year, and hoping that we wouldn’t be a social pariah, which -unfortunately for the only robot in third grade- he was. After all, making that connection with the audience is what makes a story real.
I like that he was totally optimistic and excited, then by the hands of some mean kids, became immediately downtrodden.

That robot looks like a younger, more innocent version of Bender Bending RodrÃguez. But as we all know (?) Bending Unit 22 was created in Tijuana, and I doubt it went to school in the US back in 1953.

Manos, this little guy is US cold war technology so it’s very possible.

Ron, “desegregation in public schools” totally intentional. I’ll talk more about that in a future post. Was very happy to see you picked that up.

Ahhh…is it because they throw rocks at him that his vision is all messed up?
So adorable. More robot, please!
