Sketchy Temple Glyphs
I was so hoping to have Part 3 of Interview with a Sphinx today. During the last episode, we saw a lot more in the underground tunnels. Although it turns out most of them are glyphs we’ve already seen. But that’s actually a good thing. Because it’s allowing me to fill in the blanks for some of the missing or hard to read areas.
If you remember from my overhead diagram in Part 2, one of the sides wasn’t shown to us. At first I thought we saw that side this week… but just like another John we know, “I was wrong”.
That new set was actually our second grouping from Part 1. But that’s still good news, because all we really got from that pillar side was the big Tehuti glyph.
It does make me wonder if there actually is a Fourth Set. I can totally imagine the art director being like, “are we even gonna see the backs of these things?” Regardless, I’ll be looking out for them… and maybe after all these posts, so will you. lol.
So I’ve been drawing. Trying to build some nice definitive sets to go by. Drew a bunch last night, and just picked up the pencil again this evening. But sadly my online hieroglyphics translator @edrafalko, (also known affectionately round these parts as Nessie, Squashy, or One Eyed Willy), is having a little trouble with them.
So I’ve decided to help him out by posting what I’ve done so far. These are scans from my sketchbook. And below them is a hieroglyphics charts I found at http://www.omniglot.com/writing/egyptian.htm
I’ve already found some pretty interesting stuff myself… particularly the three dots, which the chart says indicates “sand; minerals; pellets”. Sandwiched in between two “loaf” symbols, and you get Ed’s “Smoke Loafs” translation.
Anyway, I’m gonna continue to refine these pics, and I’ll post new versions eventually. But in the meantime, does anyone see anything else in here? Think I’ve gotten something wrong?
Let a fella know.

The first symbol on your first sketch looks like the Aramaic symbol for “S”. A lot of them look like hieroglyphs, no doubt, but I am pretty sure there are some Hebrew symbols in there too. Could it have been the prop masters job to make sure that the temple was covered in indecipherable ancient writing to throw everyone off?

Zoe, I’ve refined some of these glyphs and I’ll be posting them later. I doubt there’s anything in here that’s not standard Ancient Egyptian. If there are symbols in these drawings that look odd it’s because I had trouble reading the glyph on the screen (lighting, distortion, wear on the pillar), so I just drew a squiggle that looked similar.

[...] have their own chart of glyphs. It’s not as extensive as the one from omniglot.com that I posted yesterday… but by using the two and a few other sources, I’ve pieced together a LOT of this hush [...]
