Previously on Leung
That dude is awesome. Period. Ken Leung is awesome. Comma. And I friggin loved this episode. Exclamation Point.
I suppose most of my posts paint me as a guy who only digs the NatGeo angle of the show. But the truth is, I’d trade in every statue, polar bear fossil, volcanic cave with a donkey wheel at it’s chewy candy center, Anubis, Sekhmet, Mickey Mantle, Kerouac… every hieroglyph- well maybe not every hieroglyph- but I would give up almost all of that stuff for just few moments of sincere inner character struggle. Locke and his dad. Jack and his Ex-Wife. Our strong, confident Le Flur trying to keep from crumbling back into Sawyer.
And I thought this episode was chock full of it… ranks close to the top for me.
I mean, come on, we all knew who the baby was. I’ve been saying it for months: Chang and Miles are both irritable as hell… they had to be related. But check it out:
Miles stares in at the father who was never there for him, as his younger self is given the kind of love he always wanted from the man.
Is he relieved? Now that he knows his father did care? Is he scared or sad for the kid… knowing how its life will turn out? Or… is he now flirting with Hurley’s simple yet alluring concept of time travel… wondering if maybe things can change?! Whether their presence here has altered something… something that could allow his younger self to live the life he never had? If so, does that make him happy… or jealous?
Shit’s deep, yo.
I mean, whose right cheek didn’t tighten a bit when Chang walked out and said “Miles, I need you.”… “You do?”……… Damn, mine did again just typing that.
Okay, enough of the sap. Let’s get to a little theoriosity shall we:
Miles’ mother looked like she was dying of cancer didn’t she? I think it’s now pretty safe to say the Dharma Initiative was exposed to some serious radiation. The Swan, Jughead. We can check that off our list, right? We’d have to assume Miles is okay because he wasn’t exposed for long, but my guess is the rest would have suffered the same fate if the Purge hadn’t killed them first. And yeah, Ben’s tumor is likely linked as well. But how about Mile’s powers?
We got a little more info on that plane at the bottom of the ocean. Our dead man was on his way to deliver those photos and plane-order from Season 4. We’re led to believe he was working for Widmore… and was probably killed by Tom… who then confiscated the materials before showing them to Michael. Hmmm… it’s complicated. Seems like such an odd package… why would anyone make something like that? I know some of you have signed off on “hoax plane theory”…. I’m still holding off.
What lies in the shadow of the statue? Well, I guess they’re really asking. I assumed it was some kind of code. But if they really want to know, here are two thoughts I had.
- Someone said that the Orchid Station lies in the shadow of the statue we saw this season. I would go a step further and say that the donkey wheel may have once laid in the shadow of the statue. It’s totally possible that this Island’s past volcanic eruption covered vast areas of land in volcanic rock. That donkey wheel may have once been above ground. Also an interesting bit of trivia that takes us back to my Atlantis theory: I found this great blog post while doing a bit of research.
- This might be stretching it a bit, but is it possible that they’re using the word “lies” differently than we think? I mean, with all the lying happening on this show… they could be.
And who is Bram working for? Eloise Hawking? She’s the only one who knew all of that flight info. And it’s conceivable that she’s a third faction in this war. I don’t know why, but I feel like this is somehow linked to that group of scientists who arrived at the end. Maybe cause Faraday was with them.
And for this last bit, I’d like to introduce you all to our new resident egyptologist, @edrafalko. Ed is one of my oldest tweeps. Been there since the beginning (March 08). And yet, I know very little about the dude… except that sometimes he appears online in the form of a sasquatch… sometimes a sphinx… and sometimes a sort of skull type thingy. And recently I learned that he can read hieroglyphics. So I asked if he wouldn’t mind lending a hand on a couple posts I have in store. He knows absolutely nothing about Lost except some screen caps I provided him.

And here’s what he had to say:
I only see glyphs on the left side of the board- top line reads, almost literally, ‘markings from a Town God’s Mouth’.
The circle with the x in it is almost always a marker for a place name, but his translation doesn’t mention it. He’s got it as ‘writing of the words of God’. I think that’s not complete.
UPDATE: Ok, I think the top line reads ‘The language of the Land of the Gods’ and the bottom line reads ‘(unknown) many mysteries’.
Interesting to me is that the last two glyphs are close ( but not identical to) the symbol for the city of Thebes, across from Luxor, and near the Valley of the Kings- but his example dates to 2600 bc and they didn’t start using the Valley for Royal burials until almost a thousand years after that!
Actually, Ed, that says before 2600 bc. Perhaps thousands of years before; labeled as Archaic Egyptian… and listed as coming before Old Egyptian on the right. Hmmm… Archaic, huh? I like that. That word could end up replacing “Ancient” here at johncabrera.com. Big news.
So what’s everyone else’s take?

I feel the need to stress that the idea of the alternate reading of “lies” is genius, even if it’s not true. Also, did you ever see the online clip with the good Dr. and the time travelling rabbits? I have the feeling that old Miles will make his father very nervous if the truth comes out.

I am such a sucker for Miles. I agree, Ken Leung is amazing. I got totally sucked into his story moreso than I’ve been sucked into anyone’s on Lost (well, maybe tied with Locke when we were first learning about his father). Maybe it is because I’ve been dealing with my own emerging psychic abilities for a few years… I am also liking his new friendship with Hurley. And how does one not LOVE how cranky Chang is?
I’ll admit I payed little attention to much else besides the character development this ep was steeped in. Though when Bram showed up I instantly began thinking who on earth this third faction could be. Thanks John for mentioning Eloise and the scientific faction. Perhaps we’ll get a faraday ep soon to find out more about this?
So… “What lies in the shadow of the statue?” Does this mean that the gun toting band of Ajira survivors are working with the new faction. They do have that big ol’ metal container… is that some scientific equipment. I had originally thought it was Widmore sending in people to somehow see to it that Ben never got saved after Sayid shot him… guess that is shot to hell… ha.
And lastly… Hi @edrafalko Thanks for the translations!
Oh… and welcome back to the states John… hope your vaca was restful and inspiring.

sgnp, yeah, I have seen that vid. And you’re totally right. That’s gonna be some craziness when Chang finds out. I mean, if he seems cranky now. lol. I actually wanted to mention that video a while back, but I’m not sure how to treat some of that stuff from the Lost Experience. But this vid certainly gives us another perspective on all of this time travel stuff. I mean, if “whatever happened, happened” then why is Chang so concerned with the two iterations of the rabbit coming in contact? He wouldn’t be able to influence the outcome of events anyway. And what happens when the two do come in contact? Does it have anything to do with Miles’ powers?
I also have another theory on the third faction… but again, it kind of requires that you know The Lost Experience and all of that Hanso/Mittelwerk stuff. And I’m not sure how I feel about bringing all of that into these posts.
P, the vaca was über good. Filled my creative tank.

I’ve always been interested with the daddy issues in the show and am really curious as to where they’ll all go. And now seeing Miles with his dad makes me think that maybe, just maybe the reason why Cheung kicks his wife and him out of the Island, is because Miles told him about the purge.
The other thing I love about the episode was the numbers! it’s been a long time since we’ve had truly a close encounter with them, at least as a whole, and I really wanna know why the hell did they go to Hurley when he was in the mental institution. Aaaand now that we saw all the numbers again, could this mean that maybe more bad luck is in store for Hurley? I just don’t even want to think in the possibility of him being the next big shocking death in Lost… or could he?
LOL at the Atlantis-Lost post you found and now I really want you, with the collaboration of edrafalko of course, to do a post dissecting each and every hieroglyphic we’ve seen in the show, specially last week’s
Pauline on 16 Apr 2009 at 11:42 pm #
Oh… And I forgot to mention… Just because it is a tv show, specifically lost… Does that have to mean there is a scientific reason that Miles is phsychic? I can pull pain out of people with my hands & know stupid things about them like they have a white cat named bealy & are thinking about painting their house yellow & I’ve never been exposed to high frequency magnetic fields or time traveling rabbits. ;p
John Cabrera on 16 Apr 2009 at 11:57 pm #
We’re already ahead of you on that one Itzel. Hehe. Notice how I said “a couple posts I have in store”. These weren’t the only screen caps I gave him.
P, not that you know of… I mean, maybe in an alternate reality you were.

Did you see that quick insert that says God Loves You as he Loved Jacob in the Orchid orientation clip above? Interesting

Hi everyone…my first Lost “post” response ever, so bare with me.
So I was thinking maybe Miles has this ability coz he is dead or ‘not of our world’ as there are 2 of him on the island and he will have a connection to himself as a baby. (Hurley’s you can hold yourself remark.) So by coming into contact with himself as a child in whatever state he is, on the island it affected him (coz the island is pretty magical at times.) So when Cheung finds out (and he will) Miles (adult version) knows Daniel/can do what he does/has time traveled etc, he will send baby Miles and his mother away thinking it will stop him returning to the island in the future (but of course it has already happened.) And it is out of love and safety he sends them away which is what Miles would never of known (= closure)
Miles keeps saying you can’t change anything as it has already happened, which means he will be the one that this happens too if things can be changed or he wouldn’t have made such a big deal about it. (Character arcs etc.) Don’t you love that by Syid trying to kill Ben is what turns him into what he became! And it’s Sawyer and Kate who helped. Also did we all notice the guy who kidnapped Miles is on the island in Suns timezone?
Also if Sun saw the picture of Jack etc in the 70s photo, does that mean they were all killed by Ben in the purge or coz they know they will time travel again?
Also it seems that since so many of the characters have had parents on the island or know about the island eg (Daniel, Miles, Jack/Claire, Locke, Ben, Charlotte, Penelope, Ethan and probably more…) maybe there’s a whole storyline in Lost like in Heroes to do another parent that will be revealed.
Just like Daniels mother has come into it.
Have we found out about Jacob/his family or Richard? What about Claire/Jacks father is he alive or a manifestation on the island. (He talks to Locke but doesn’t help him.) Could Locke be like this? We have seen Christian in 2 diff time zones walking around.

Liked this ep a lot. Thought it was going to be more of an interim episode until they got the Faraday/100th ep, but it was filled with a lot of good stuff. I love the mythology of the show, but I’m glad the last few have gone back to telling more character based stories. I was surprised at his back story and how emotional it really was for a character who seems on the whole to have operated thus far without any emotions. It seems like his interaction with Chang will continue, and not sure who mentioned it above, but I definitely agree with the theory that he kicks them off the island because he finds out about the purge. There was another video floating around out there, where Pierre says something along the lines of “if you’re watching this I’m already dead.” He goes on to try and prevent the purge, but the cameraman (an unseen faraday) tells him it’s pointless. I think that Pierre believes in time travel but doesn’t necessarily understand the rules of it, so it’s possible his reaction to the two bunnies might be an overreaction. Or it’ll cause some cataclysmic event when Miles and little Miles meet up. Liked we found out what was up with the weird 3.2 million request back in season 4. The Swan was being built in Hostile territory, makes me wonder if when Ben wandered in it in season 2, how much about it did he really know. Was dead guy in the beginning, the infamous dead dharma skeleton with the hole in his skull? I don’t know if there’s a third faction involved in this war. I get the feeling that the new folks work for Widmore, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Eloise did as well. They both wanted everyone to go back, maybe Eloise just has more of a tolerance for Ben than Widmore does. Think the DeGroots just rolled in with Faraday? I would also agree the island and cancer are related. As long as you stay on island you’re golden, unless you piss the island off. Can’t wait til next ep, heard lots of answers about island, Eloise and the numbers!

Atlantis did disappear from the middle of the ocean. Also it was said that there was a volcanic eruption that caused it to vanish, destroyed, whatever. Maybe the volcano went off which made it move, triggering the donkey wheel. That would explain why the statue was ruined, why there was really freaking old Egyptian writing. It was originally located near Greece, right? Close enough to Egypt.
It was a place of great knowledge. Maybe some people were brought back to life by something on Atlantis. Maybe that is why the Egyptians started to bury their royal dead in a special way. Trying to bring them back the way that happened on the island? Some myth is based on actual events even in non-tv reality.
Wasn’t there some sketches of Atlantis done in ancient times? I am trying to remember, but I think it almost looked like a maze on the island. Wouldn’t that account for the miles of maze before the temple? Behind the wall?
Secret rooms with special meaning?
I wanted to throw another idea…Miles’ mom was thrown out by her husband, right? Couldn’t it be that that Chang and his father do talk…he tells his father what is going to happen….father sends his family away…then dad dies on the island. Not telling his wife cuz would you really believe that your son from the future warned you?
I typed to much….just spit balling here.

Daddy Issues.
Seriously… what happened to JJ Abrams. Lost has a ton of daddy issues and Felicity had an epic battle going on with her father throughout the series…
also… on Fringe, Agent Dunham shot her step father years back and he now stalks her, sending her birthday cards every year that say, “Thinking of you.”
He should get some therapy.

one thing i love most about LOST is the depth of the characters and their constant struggle. all of them have suffered so much and i love seeing their stories unravel.
i thought this episode was great! i love the idea of adult Miles being so close to baby Miles, and him seeing his mom! it’s just wild to think about and it really challenges a lot of the ideas people had about time travel on the island. i think it’s really sweet that Miles was able to see that his father did love him. i think it will really challenge his ideas about his mother. did she lie to him?
have you seen the Dharma booth video from comic-con 08?
Chang is aware of the Purge and thinks that he can’t stop it. i think that because of this knowledge he forced his wife and son to leave the island to save their lives. we don’t know if his wife knows this or not, either she believes what she told Miles, that Chang did not love them, or she’s lying. also, i think it’s Faraday who is filming the video – it even sounds like him! this video also brings about a lot of other questions – Chang wants them to continue the DI, find a way to change the past… can they? is the DI the third group we’re learning about now?
i was also thinking that Eloise is behind this new group of folks. she had all of the information that they would have needed about the flight and she is a part of the battle. she’s a powerful lady, and wouldn’t it be great if she was playing Ben and Widmore? i love her, but she’s kinda scary. i want to see more of her, we need her back story now!
dumptruck molly on 17 Apr 2009 at 3:12 pm #
oh, also. very interesting theory about Miles’ mom and her having cancer!
and, i still think the plane was a hoax. i feel like we were given proof of that last night. but i understand your desire to hold out for more!
OH! and hurley was so so great in the episode. it was so nice to get more face time with him. i love that he is embracing his ability to talk to dead people, instead of thinking that he’s crazy. i love the friendship that seems to be developing. i love that Hurley asked Chang to have beers with them. i love that Hurley is a chef! it’s so perfect. and obviously i love that Hurley is writing the Empire Strikes Back. he’s the best.
John Cabrera on 17 Apr 2009 at 3:46 pm #
DumperT, I have to admit, I’m not a huge fan of the Hurley humor on the show… but last night, I thought it was spot-the-hell-on. That Empire Strikes Back moment and later the explanation of Mile’s dilemma through that Empire and Jedi metaphor were hilarious.
I love this new friendship that’s forming between them.
Pauline on 17 Apr 2009 at 10:00 pm #
I’m liking that Hurley is trying to make lemonade out of this situation by writing Empire… I have to admit I’m not a big Hurley fan. He’s always been like Shaggy to me. Always screwing up the trap to capture the bad guys and annoying me along the way. (not a good analogy… maybe it is more about the food and the comic relief… I don’t know… )
But as I said before, I’ve really enjoyed watching he and Miles become friendly over the last few episodes. Miles’ annoyance is wonderful and the way Hurley has been sort of nonchalantly communicating with Miles, like when he was in the van writing his screenplay while chatting… it is a nice dynamic. Hurley is annoying me less. Which is good because he is tied into one of the biggest mysteries of Lost… the numbers. And since they’ve been brought up again… I see yet another one of those flashback episodes in our future. I really hope that Cheech has gotten rid of the bad bleach job by then!

Smack, I have a feeling the next episode will touch on Room 23. I think this group of scientists from Ann Arbor are going to do something with it.

What’s interesting is that he’s one of the few characters I actually care about. It’s been a long where I could actually root for one of the Lostoids.
