Ben…
Okay… one new solitary Lost Theory for you!
So in my last post, something hit me while I was writing the final paragraph about lil’ Ben. I wanted to think on it a bit more… but I also wanted to see if this next episode would touch on it at all.
Well, I couldn’t have been more excited by what I think this episode is suggesting/setting up.
Okay, so here’s what I know:
1.) Ben is a lying, unfeeling killer… he’ll say he cares, is trying to help… and then when the time is right… will totally kill ur’ass.
2.) Ben will still be alive in 15 or so years to kill off the Dharma Initiative.
3.) The Island seems to bring people back from the dead.
4.) Except the Island DIDN’T bring back Boone or Shannon or Eko… or Paolo and what’s her name.
5.) In the episode LeFlur, Curly Sue cried “We have to bury the bodies! We have to bury the bodies!” Sawyer and crew had just shot those two Others. Why bury them?? Is she afraid of what might happen to them if they’re not underground (or underwater). The Smokey Treatment perhaps??
6.) We’ve met another lying murder this season: Rousseau’s husband. That dude was a prick. Tried to shoot her. And how about the dude who got pulled into the Temple? “Hey guys, I know I just got pulled underground by a wave of black smoke that ripped off my arm in the process… but can you guys come down here and get me?” Riiiiiiiight.
7.) Christian Shepard: Typical drunk doctor…. dies…. comes back to life on the island…. now talks like a philosopher.
8.) Locke: Typical fanatical weirdo…. dies… comes back to life on the island………….. really likes mangos?! Suspicious.
So what does all this mean? I think what we’re seeing here is the beginning of the backstory for one of our favorite and misunderstood characters: Smokey Maloo.
I believe with 100% certainty… 100 perCENT absolute total cer-tain-TY that the Black Smoke Monster is responsible for bringing back to life any dead creature it can grab… and that of course excludes anything buried (or underwater). Which explains why some people stay dead on the Island and others mysteriously come back.
This is my theory. And I’m sticking to this one… period!
Although…. you know……. in another parallel universe>>>

I like your other theory. lol!

Interesting that Smokie has something to do with it. It was definitely responsible for impersonating Yemi, but he was years dead. I’m not sure if it’s responsible for everyone who has come back to life. What about all the people who weren’t resurrected (even if they weren’t buried, like the rotting frenchmen)? Does it have criteria for who it chooses?
I think Ben will heal and this won’t be that big of a deal. Maybe the bullet didn’t leave his body and will serve as the catalyst of his tumor.
John Cabrera on 26 Mar 2009 at 2:17 pm #
How do you know the frenchmen weren’t buried? I would think Rousseau’d wanna bury those guys pretty soon… they were her friends. And we’ve only seen a few skeletons on the island: Adam and Eve in the cave, Ben’s dad in the Dharma van, in the plane, in the ditch.

A coworker suggested that Locke wasn’t healed by the island after the Oceanic crash. Instead, he wakes up on the island in his past when he can still walk. If that’s the case, then maybe Christian and Locke weren’t resurrected, but they’re alive because they’re on the island in the past and haven’t died yet.

Dude, that’s a really creepy and cool theory!

Just watched the new episode…really like your thoughts and what not on the future (past?) of the series…
#5.) I think the chick was just scared that the hostiles were going to find the dead bodies and know that someone from Dharmaville killed them, thus breaking the truce, I don’t think the majority (or any) of the Dharma members in the LeFleur past understand the powers that the island hold. Possibly the full potential of the island has not been realized as the side effects of the pregnant women have not started to take effect.
My theory on Christian (and Claire, for that matter, and possibly Ben in future episodes, feel free to hole punch the shit out of it.)
While they did die in “real” time (after the crash of Oceanic flight 815) something happened in the past that the surviving members of 815 changed. Perhaps they died or the changes caused them to cease to exist / be born. Thus, they’re stuck in this alternate reality/supernatural reality on the island where they’re neither living nor dead.
My main concern about the missing members, agreed, WHERE THE HELL IS FARRADAY, and what about Rose and Bernard? What timeline are they in? Did they survive the flaming arrows attack on the beach? Who the hell was shooting those damn flaming arrows? What’s with the four toed statue?
Okay, that is all.
God, I can’t believe I now have to wait 6 days to get any resolution on even part of a question.

Ecruz3 that is very interesting. Great posts John… you make me feel like I can understand Lost, after I read your analysis. lol

The Frenchmen were laying out on the beach decaying. We saw them right before Jin found Danielle and Robert.
But Meredith makes a point that keeps nagging at me: in the 70′s, no one seems aware of the “supernatural” effects of the island. While it doesn’t faze 70′s Richard, he also doesn’t seem to understand the things Locke or Sawyer say to him or make any mention of other oddities of the island. Perhaps when we meet him he’s a normal 40-something man (with thick eyelashes). We only expect him to be mysterious because of everything we’ve seen thus far about 2007.
The same thing for the Dharmaites; while they were founded on investigating the alternative principles of the island, when Sayid appears and offers proof of time travel, they appear to refuse to believe it, believing instead in the more logical explanation. We’ve also seen a woman give birth naturally in the ’70′s, and to my knowledge no one has come back to life, or done anything else unexpected.
Sorry for the mind vomit, I’m just thinking aloud. I think that the island may have always had special properties, but they aren’t realized or manipulated until after 1977. It’s a result of this manipulation that causes things to go haywire, and really odd things to start happening. Similar to the Frozen Donkey Wheel coming loose, perhaps other aspects of the island were knocked off-kilter.
Sorry it’s not really a full-blown theory, or maybe it’s just something that is obvious to everyone else and should go without saying.

Smokey Maloo? I always wondered what its name is.
I hate telling you my theories because they always have huge hole in them. But here goes…….
When Ben shot Locke he didn’t die because he was the new leader of the island. Like Ben used to be. So if they were in the past the island still chose Ben to be the leader. So he wouldn’t die from a gun shot.
Plus didn’t the darma village look like crap when Sun is there because they just had that shoot out with the boat guys? Plus we don’t know when they are on the island….but if that is true where are all the other people? Oh hell I don’t know.
I just want to see next weeks episode. It is a show that is the worst tease, but in a good way.

Another thought…
When Daniel made the point of going to meet Desmond in the past, to tell him to find his mother in LA, Desmond woke with the new memory, and remembered meeting Daniel at the Swan.
Is the same true for Ben, does he see himself as a boy going and talking to Sayid, and then Sayid subsequently shooting him? If so, I wonder what steps Ben takes to prevent his own death, because you know that guy’s got a few tricks up his sleeves.

I think you’ve got something there Johnny. I definitely wanna think on that one. But here are a couple things to remember… When he invades the Dharma camp, Richard does say about the sound forcefield something to the effect of “that thing can’t keep us out.” or “has no effect on us” or something… felt a bit on supernatural tip.
And it’s true that they scoff at the idea of time travel. But not everyone. Candle believes it. And from the first scene in episode one, it sounds like you’re right… they don’t really know about all of the island’s powers yet. What I’m curious about is WHY they’re building the Swan. That station as we know, is being used for more than just electromagnetism experiments. It’s also preventing the world from being destroyed. Maybe after they build it, they’re like, “uh oh! I guess some needs to stay here round the clock otherwise what we just built will totally destroy the world.”
And I got the sense that Rousseau had just killed those guys. Maybe within the hour. I looked at some pictures online and they still look pretty fresh. Although, now that I think about it, I do remember hearing the sound of flies when he sees them…. but it is an island. Flies are pretty quick.

Meredith, Leah… interesting. But M, I think there’s more to the burying. Because she didn’t say HIDE, she said BURY. Burying a body is not easy.
I agree with both of you that one week is way too long to wait for this show.
itzel on 27 Mar 2009 at 3:14 pm #
Leah, but still the thing with Dharmaville is pretty weird, I mean, yes it looks like crap, but more like abandoned crap from the Dharma years. There were recruitment signs and also the Dharma team pictures in the wall. The Others were supposed to have cleaned that when they took over it. And didn’t the writer’s tell us Sun and company were in 2007?
About Smokey, I’m still not sure if he’s the responsible for all those recurrections, cause really, what is it? what’s smokey? why is it smoke but sounds like a robot with metallic thingys sometimes? /smokeyrant. And also Arzt wasn’t buried, I mean yes he exploded, but he wasn’t technically underground right? so he should’ve appeared alive in later episodes. Also Goodwin, remember when we saw him rotting? ew and also, not alive lol.

I think you might be onto something about the burying of the bodies. I didn’t pick up on that, I just thought she was trying to protect her people from repercussions, but now in retrospect it makes sense. Especially since, if I’m remembering right, Smokey didn’t start parading around as Yemi until after they went back to the plane and discovered Yemi’s body was missing. Same thing with Christian, when Jack found the casket, there was no body. Dharma video staple Pierre also mentions in the new recruit Orientation video that the sonar fence is to protect them from the islands “wildlife” and since Richard pretty much stated that the fence doesn’t affect him and his people, Pierre’s probably referring to smokey which means it’s possible Amy and the rest of Dharma may have some insight into what it is and what it’s capable of. They certainly know how to keep it out. I’ve got a feeling lil Ben’s suffered a similar experience in the temple that rousseau’s crew did, though I have no idea what that may be other than a general increase in douche-baggery. This could be way out there, or not since it’s Lost, but think there is any relevance to the defective smoke alarm being what led Flash Forward Jack down to the hospital lobby where he had a brief run in with his pops? Also this is what Michael Emerson (Ben) has to say on Smokey: “I think it all has something to do with metallic dust. I think the smoke monster is connected to that ring of powder that surrounds Jacob’s cabin. They’ve established that there are supermagnetic forces at work on the Island, so what better medium for those forces to work through than through fine filings of metal.” Who knows? Interesting theory though.
