(from Wet Hot American Summer)

HENRY: [demonstrating with rocks] See, this is us and we’re traveling around the sun. That’s a 1.3 million mile trip every year! You might say that each and every one of us is a crew member here on Spaceship Earth.
CAMPER: When will we say that?
HENRY: Any time. Dinner. Literally any time.

do you mean like this kind of spaceship? :)

Oh I was just hoping that Desmond's other life is the perfect Penny story... though the tragedy of their separation and joy of their reunion makes it so much better.

And it's his catchphrase.

It's kinda like Courtney K. just said. I feel like an alien/spaceship ending would be a last-ditch effort on their part to give us answers, since I'm sure they didn't expect the show to last this long and probably had a different, simpler ending in mind. If it does turn out to be a spaceship, and they come out and say that was the plan the whole time, than I'll be semi-okay with it. But if it was just to try to appease us, then I'll be upset!

No Lost post is complete without spaceship talk.
Definitely thought the same thing with the sex...awkward much? I loved Sawyer as a cop as well and Miles being his partner brightened up my night! I also liked how he was the same Sawyer in a lot of ways. Also the fact that he hadn't found the man who killed his family.
The universes are confusing. We know that the island existed in the alti-verse and i am thinking the island being underwater is a red herring. I'm excited for tonight to see what is said. I read that next week will give us a good amount of answers as well as the first hour of the finale.
I am excited for this episode. As interested as I am in the Black Rock I am curious to get some follow up on what Richard had said to Jack about being gifted and such. Only a few more hours!

My internal clock got all kerfluffled and decided that 1:33am was enough for me. Since it's Tuesday, my brain started working on Lost.

I'm starting to get very Zen about Lost.
The current theory swimming in my head is Croatoan.

Seriously.

What if the writer's don't actually owe us any explanations? What if this is just one of those mysteries of life?

Much like when people from grade school/high school/college/former cubicle farms fall out of your life; you don't really get to know the details of what happened to them...they just go on.

Sure, I'd be disappointed and the internet would EXPLODE; but it's a bit like when The Sopranos ended. They just faded to black. No happy ending, no closure.

Granted, I didn't really watch much of The Sopranos and when I heard about the ending I wrinkled my nose at it. But still, it was what it was.

I'd *like* an ending that makes the pieces fit. However I'm starting to feel like the writers are trying to teach us something; or that they had no idea what the frak they were starting when they did and now are just as confused as we the viewers. Which also, makes sense. :)

That all being said: Spaceship :D

But of course...
Top Gun = a drool worthy Val Kilmer
Alien = 1 of my fave actors, Harry Dean Stanton.

You know I'm just playing with you J!
The most awesome thing about Lost is that you can take almost anything in popular culture and and relate it to this show... it's almost like the Kevin Bacon game. Before last week I could have easily written something comparing Little House on the Prairie to Lost... and everyone would have laughed at me. Had I actually written it though... I would have been king.... King of Lost! Mwahahahaha!

Though... I'm not ready to give up on this whole Atlantis/Lemuria thing... in hopes that the islandship is Lemurian in origin... do you think you might consider go to the Lemurian Retreat on Mt Shasta in the fall? Come on! You know you wanna... We could awaken our inner Lemurian! ;) http://www.lemurianawakening.com/workshops.html

P.S. Ribbing is like a sport in my family and I hope you can consider it a compliment that I tease you about this stuff sometimes.

Aww, come on. Plenty of ships are designed to spit you out in certain situations. I have to imagine you've seen Top Gun and Aliens. ;) And yes I do think this thing can be and has been "driven". But drive is a broad term and so is my use here... but you know what I mean when I say "ship".

Ah well. I know how scary the word spaceship can sound to some lost fans, so I suppose I deserve the ribbing. lol.

But J... it isn't really a ship. A ship is a vehicle you drive. This thing spits people out once they start the moving process... it also effects time travel off of it like with Demond's time traveling consciousness while he was on the freighter (like Picard's in All Good Things).

I'd buy it being a "spaceship" if it only moved people through space and time while they are on the island... but it pulls planes out of the sky... why not call the island the bermuda ilangle?

I will give you points though because a spaceship can be powered by magnetic sails and the island is chock full of electromagnetism... so you've got that working for you...

And why me of all people? When I hear spaceship I think of Will Robinson on the Jupiter II, The Enterprise, of Tess (Emilie de Raven) gliding through the cosmos in her hunk-of-rock shaped ship fleeing Roswell in order to save both herself and the child inside her because if she stays on earth it will kill them. (a lie but for the purposes of related to lost... I won't explain the details.)

Oh... and Molly asked you a while ago... why would FLocke send James to Hydra Island? I think it was so Flocke could get some one on one time with Kate. It also mirrors back to a Juliet/Ben story line from seasons past. :)

Man... one thing about these comments where you and I disagree on stuff... it really brings out my inner-geek that I usually keep hidden under my thin veil of Fonz like cool.

Aw come on, P. You of all people should know what I mean when I say spaceship. I've never even used the word "alien" until this comment thread, even though I think it's likely Jacob and FLocke are not of this world.

Fact is, if that Island ends up being an advanced piece of machinery that can travel through space (be it "space: the cosmos" or "time/space"), regardless of who built it or who controls it, it's a spaceship. It's easiest way to describe it.

(Disclaimer: the following comment is meant in the spirit of humor and not intended to sound bitchy or angry.)

Hey... it sounds like you are changing the definition of something unexplainable that the public generally accepts as an explanation rather than accept what the show has given us.

Can't you like, come up with a name on your own to describe an advanced piece of machinery that can be used as a mode of transportation or perhaps use the one given on the show?

If Donkey Wheel isn't good enough, I'm thinking Island Taxi Wheel or perhaps the more whimsical Gilligan Contraption. Or what about IDTM? Inter Dimensional Time Machine. Or OOOH! Skipper's Time Taxi..?

Otherwise... you are just confusing us poor nerds who love spaceships just to get a rouse out of us... and making us drop our spaceship trou. What gives brother John?

"I think when most people hear “aliens” they think of little green men and space ships like the one ET rode in. But it could be very different. Not anything like we’d usually imagine. It could support a show mythology that’s still very ancient and surprising. If the show went in that direction they’d have the opportunity to redefine the alien convention of sci-fi in the same way they sort of redefined the time traveling convention. I’d love for them to take up that challenge rather than just settling on another Newhart-like ending."

What John said. For me personally what I like the most besides the characters is the Atlantis / Lemuria aspect. They are some resources which speak of their technologies pretty much the same way as some sci-fi technologies. In that regard Atlantis and Lemuria are very alien-like, at least to our current technological breakthroughs. So it would be a nice and kinda new approach to "aliens". I dig it.

Also, cop-Sawyer was hot. And Flocke bitchslapping cray cray Claire. Best thing. EVER.

I should probably clarify: I like saying the word spaceship just cause it sounds so funny within the context of the show. And maybe cause it get the dialog nice and heated ;) But my definition of Spaceship is much broader than just something that travels through the cosmos. I really love this idea that the Island is a sort of interdimensional ship. Regardless, when I say spaceship, I just mean that the Island is not an island but rather an advanced piece of machinery that can be used as a mode of transportation. I also think we've seen it used for that purpose already (Ben turning the wheel "moved" the Island)... so I'm unclear why it would be so terrible to find out that was it's original purpose before all the overgrowth of jungle.

I mean, we love this show for the characters anyway, right?

I should probably clarify: I like saying the word spaceship just cause it sounds so funny within the context of the show. And maybe cause it get the dialog nice and heated But my definition of Spaceship is much broader than just something that travels through the cosmos. I really love this idea that the Island is a sort of interdimensional ship. Regardless, when I say spaceship, I just mean that the Island is not an island but rather an advanced piece of machinery that can be used as a mode of transportation. I also think we’ve seen it used for that purpose already (Ben turning the wheel “moved” the Island)… so I’m unclear why it would be so terrible to find out that was it’s original purpose before all the overgrowth of jungle.

Just a thought what if the island actualy existed in a different dimension kind of land of the lost Atlantis Bermuda triangle esc why a sub could traverse it I have know idea but for that matter the portal into the island has to exist somewhere so why not. Obviously Jacob sending Jack and hurley to the light house opened that portal for the sub to arrive with widmore but also allowed a someone to glimpse the islands presence too. Remember the twilight zone episode where the little girl falls through the hole in the wall and her dad goes into save her only to findout he was moments away from being half in one and half in the other for all time?

I'm leaning towards an A scenario with a twist of D.

I'm not smart enough to flesh out my theory but I'm sort of thinking that the island is like a giant Tardis traveling though space and time.

Kristen, really?! But not only is making everything a huge illusion a total cop out and easiest ending I can imagine... it would totally negate everything we've seen. All the characters we've met would be non existent... at least in the state we've met them. If I thought, two seasons ago, that my characters and Island would be taken away by an illusion, I'd have stopped watching.

But viewing it simply as "aliens" or even comparing it to Indiana Jones is not totally fair either, because those come with a particular stigma. A mythology that includes an advanced civilization (one that could have perhaps come from another planet) has lots of nuances and directions it could go. And it's also the basis of lots of fanciful theories regarding Atlantis and ancient myths of our world.

If the only way to logically explain Donkey wheels that time travel and lighthouse mirrors that show us the world is by saying this is technology from a people who are not of our world (whatever "world" even means), I think that could be really cool. Particularly if research was done by the writers to sync up dozens of actual myths that deal with it.

I think when most people hear "aliens" they think of little green men and space ships like the one ET rode in. But it could be very different. Not anything like we'd usually imagine. It could support a show mythology that's still very ancient and surprising. If the show went in that direction they'd have the opportunity to redefine the alien convention of sci-fi in the same way they sort of redefined the time traveling convention. I'd love for them to take up that challenge rather than just settling on another Newhart-like ending.

Four words supporting Spaceship coolness:

Flight of the Navigator.

Compliance.
That's right. I said it :)

Oh, and someone just blew my mind...the show is called "Lost" and I think John touched on the fact that it's a lost civilization...somehow I really feel that even though logic tends to run screaming from the writer's room, I feel like that is pivotal. Everything in this frakkin' show is a metaphor for something else, why wouldn't the title be??

I didn't like the "fall into bed so very quickly" Charlotte, but hey, it's television. I found myself mentally hi-fiving her for not letting Cop Sawyer skate by with a bag o'beer, a sunflower and a "hey baby, let's forget that whole screaming in your face incident the other night" look on his face.

Miles is super frowny in Alti-Verse, but has made no mention of seeing dead people.

I'm waiting for Faraday to swing onto the scene in his skivvies. Not sure why, but somehow the image of him scampering about in his underpants just seems in character for that guy.

John, it's so funny that you said the thing about St. Elsewhere because for a long time I've been saying that I'd rather have that ending than anything related to aliens. I just feel like that's where everyone goes when they can't think of anything else. It's just a way for them to not have to explain anything except "it was aliens, they have ways of doing things that we don't understand!"

Ah!!! I see what you mean Cafrine. You're assuming that by detonating the bomb and changing the future they also changed the past by breaking what was an endless time loop of always going back in time. If that is the case then you and I do agree that the bomb did not send the island to the ocean floor (at least not in the physical sense)... and I can dig the volcano explanation. But there are still paradoxes that don't fit. If the Losties never went back in time, then they never effected the natural course of things for the Island... which means the Island shouldn't be down there at the bottom of the Ocean. We're assuming that Ben being shot by Sayid was what brought him into the arms of The Others... but we already saw in season 3 that Ben found Richard in the jungle, and that's what began his road to The Others.

The bottom line is, too many events in the Island's history have been deliberately blacked out.... and until the writers show us those, we'll be able to debate about what it was that caused the Island to be sunk, for the Dharma Initiative to be gassed, etc. because there are too many possibilities right now. Which is I guess what the writers want.

JP, ok I'd choose a.) advanced unfamiliar technology, but don't you think also an extraterrestrial answer would be too far fetched, even for Lost? Idk, it somewhat reminds me of the last Indiana Jones movie *shrug*.

So what if this unfamiliar technology is still human, but just unknown? I mean, with all the hieroglyphs maybe it's ancient knowledge that just didn't reach the contemporary world?

And yeah, I still don't know how all the chain of events changed for the Losties after the bomb. Cause yes, Ben was on the Island, but I don't think he was on the temple, I don't even think he was shot on the Alti-verse and I'm thinking he got along with his dad from the start. So, we are left with a world where Jacob didn't meddle with anyone, I think that's mainly what the 1977 Losties' actions did. But I still can't explain why the 77 bomb would change also the past... Lost-headache haha.

A. If I had my druthers... an ending would tie together two of your favorite things J. Spaceship and a lost continent. Many folks believe Lemuria was a continent that sunk... but also that Lemuria was inhabited by aliens ~ some say from Alpha Centauri. People actually believe that the inhabitants of Lemuria actually still exist today. Some believe they live deep in the canyons surrounding Sedona, AZ and some believe they live in tunnels under Mt. Shasta in CA. Apparently they are here to help the human race advance.

So... in the Lost construct... Jacob and MIB would be Lemurians and the island would be the Lost continent of Lemuria. And if MIB actually gets his Great Space Coaster up and running and leaves the island... couldn't that be how it ends up on the floor of the ocean? Where is the ship? They couldn't have built those Temple sets for just those few episodes... and Dogen seemed pretty bad ass just to be guarding a bunch of sheep and some water? What if he was guarding the spaceship that was located under the temple? (What have you done to me J?! Did you know that if you said Spaceship enough times it would send me on the fact finding mission from COROT-7b? (Yeah, that was last comment there was my geek-fu in full force. Can you handle it?)

But I digress...
Perhaps Abrams and crew went to one of this guy's workshops:
http://www.drbrucegoldberg.com/AncientCivi.htm
He's covered all the the bases:
Lemuria? Check
Egypt? check
Aliens? check
Time Travelers? check
anti-gravity devices? check (donkey wheel, right?)

coincidence? hmmmm.... ;-)

Though, they may have been playing a lot Golden Sun? http://goldensun.wikia.com/wiki/Lemuria
What with it's elemental lighthouses and life extending water... who is to say?

To sum up... I would feel much better about this type of ending over the others. It's just batshitecrazy enough to work, no?
