Podcast 1
As my capper to this extraordinary month of blogging (well, to me really), here’s my first ever… podcast.
It’s not much. Sort of a template for how future episodes might sound. I used Griffin iTalk on the iPhone and the supplied iPhone headphone mic. It worked nicely, I thought.
So, there’s my voice. At the least it should give you an idea for the speaking tone of my written posts. I write almost every one by talking them out loud. Seriously. They sound pretty much like this.

Ha. John the best part of this is how you just simply trail off in thought at the end. Your mind doesn’t seem to rest. That’s fun. That could also be clinical. Get that checked.
Seriously though. Your enthusiasm towards outward communication and networking is admirable. Usually I hate people all day long. It’s refreshing to see through your glasses instead of mine. Although I prefer my frames better.
Cheers to the podcast.

You know you wanted to say your antenna got bigger. Admit it.

I liked the podcast. It’s always fun to hear people’s voices. I can’t wait to hear more about your upcoming projects and the website updates.

Great post and congrats on your first podcast. It’s so ironic that your first podcast was on my birthday and I produce a video podcast.
Good luck with everything and I am looking forward to enjoying more of your content.
John Cabrera on 28 Feb 2009 at 12:14 pm #
Happy Birthday, Sarah!!!
Pauline on 28 Feb 2009 at 1:33 pm #
Bravo jc! Though… I still hope to see a few written blogs (especially the more complicated Lost theories since they come out more like essasy than blogs) but I digress.
I’m totally not looking for props… but… there is a certain dreamy crooner from the East Bay that you loved like no other for an entire month that I don’t think I’ve ever heard you mention. I personally think he should be a pop star and I fear if much more time passes he may end up doing what he has told me he’s thought of for years which is moving to spain where he already is considered a pop star. So come on Sir… give him a little shout out especially now that you have your army in place.
I’ll owe you.

You’re such a twerd! (Or is it called tweek?) Oh, and that’s a good thing..:)
I’ve never made a podcast, so out of curiosity, how much did/do you plan on what to say?
I loved the end, haha.
I think podcasts are a cool alternative to normal blog posts, it’s a nice change from reading. And yours was funny and interesting too..
Just_Linda on 28 Feb 2009 at 1:56 pm #
How fun, JP! This was really fun to listen to and you did a GREAT job on the Twitter badge! I have yet to watch LOST this week so I am going to go no further on this page lest I get spoiled.
Vanessa N. on 28 Feb 2009 at 2:18 pm #
Thoroughly enjoyed the month, John, even the blogs on topics I know less or care less about than others. So, props for that.
And, although my mind often zeroes in on typos, I don’t remember there being many of those either.
It’s rather fitting that your last blog of the month was a podcast…an ending becoming a beginning…like how the last graduation ceremony is called commencement.
I feel like I should have a better ending to this comment…Mmmm…

I have a guess: sushisushi
Jules on 28 Feb 2009 at 4:43 pm #
hee, that was pretty much awesome.
um, i have to say, i’m slightly disturbed by Ron’s comment that “Usually I hate people all day long” that made me sadface. maybe he needs a this-is-why-people-are-fantastic blog post at some point? haha. just a thought.
anyway, it’s been quite fun trying to keep up with you! looking forward to continuing to do so, and seeing what else is on the horizon for you. thanks for sharing bits of your life with us!

John Cabrera on 28 Feb 2009 at 5:14 pm #
Whew! Thanks guys! I have to say when I posted it, I had big butterflies. Funny, I’ve been doing this type of thing on stage, TV, film for years, and yet this really had me nervous. I don’t know why. I really look up to and admire vloggers like you Sarah. In fact, don’t think I haven’t studied your stuff a bit.
Anyway, incouraging words from all of you… really.
Jeannie, hehe… nope. But maybe that’ll be a future episode. I certainly like that.
Jules, I don’t think Ron was being entirely serious. I know he works in a stressful environment… and sometimes it’s fun to be a cynic. Believe me, I’ve got plenty of that too. lol.
Jules on 28 Feb 2009 at 5:31 pm #
well, if he WAS being entirely serious, he probably wouldn’t be on the internet at all… hasn’t it been said that there’s no better way to lose faith in humanity than spend too much time online?
but still, i know far too many who genuinely feel that way often enough that it worries me! but maybe i’m just more naive than they are… (i’m okay with that.) or maybe i just worry too much. hee.
hey, have you heard of Umbrella Tree? my friend (@littlevalentine on twitter) just pointed me their direction… they’re odd and quirky, but kind of cool, you might like them?

John Cabrera on 28 Feb 2009 at 6:48 pm #
Oh and to answer Marte’s question… I’ll just re-pose it to the group. What do you guys think… on a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being word for word and 1 being 100% off-the-cuff… what do you think I was doing?
Vanessa on 28 Feb 2009 at 7:29 pm #
I couldn’t say between 1-10, but I figured you had some type of outline going at least to gather your thoughts… Unless maybe you are just super organized in your ideas and could speak off the cuff that fluidly. You say you were nervous, but that didn’t come through at all.
It was great to hear you. I give you props because I could never do that, mostly because I think my recorded voice sounds like a 4 year old little girl. I’m looking forward to your next podcast. You’re a natural.
kelseroo on 28 Feb 2009 at 7:36 pm #
That was great! It is true- now when I read your tweets or blog posts I can hear your voice in my mind. I look forward to future podcasts. As for this one- I think you wrote out an outline of talking points, not word for word, but not completely off-the-cuff.
Ron Curry on 28 Feb 2009 at 7:45 pm #
Nice! I love how these comments turned into group therapy for Ron for a minute.
I’m actually a huge fan of people in general, but not so much the ones who suck at being decent.
Speaking of people:
http://www.simonhoegsberg.com/we_are_all_gonna_die/slider.html
Jules, John hit it pretty much on the head. I’m just a professional cynic. I’ve seen more ugliness in this world than most people ever will and that tends to affect people (it’s also a good thing that not everyone will have to experience all this nastiness). However, I am constantly reminded of the goodness in people at the same time.
I try very hard to surround myself with people who enrich, versus people who drain. It’s actually why I keep pestering John here. He’s good people.
And to bring it all full circle and back on topic, I think John’s found an excellent new outlet for his creativity, even if only to decompress. Variety is the spice of life. Also curry.
leah on 28 Feb 2009 at 8:47 pm #
That was really interesting. You have a really good voice. Like kind of sexy. I will deny I said that if you bring it up.
Any who…..very informational. Never cared about your typos. Mine are worse. The end was really funny. I think your closing music should be the sound cue from Lost. You know when the Lost white lettering is floating towards you.
Can’t wait for more.
Gayla McCord on 28 Feb 2009 at 10:31 pm #
Congrats on your first podcast. It’s always fun to interject personal elements into blog posts – and voice is my second favorite only behind candid snapshots. But not so many share those.
John Cabrera on 28 Feb 2009 at 11:28 pm #
Gayla, do you mean taking a shot of yourself with a camera phone or something? Or someone else taking a pic of you when you aren’t paying attention? I’m a little unclear, but I’d be game for adding stuff like that.
Paola on 01 Mar 2009 at 12:26 am #
Your voice is sexy…
Marte on 01 Mar 2009 at 12:33 am #
Hmm…I’m not sure. I guess you did have a pretty good idea about what you wanted to talk about, but just as an idea and not word-by-word. Or maybe you just flipped through your blog while talking, getting the topics from there.
Anyway it turned out just fine, I’m just fascinated with the whole concept..
gemma on 01 Mar 2009 at 7:11 am #
Great podcast. I’m still to be convinced about twitter though… Then again, it took me 2 years to be convinced to joing facebook and I still think it’s a little bit stalker friendly!
Brit_Actress_Ashley on 01 Mar 2009 at 8:00 am #
Great first podcast sir cabrera:) As an actress myself I agree that something like a podcast would probably make me very nervous for some strange reason..Theatre work is a piece of cake compared to doing something like this, LOL.
Rae on 01 Mar 2009 at 8:06 am #
Who was it that said your voice wasn’t what they expected? Must have been on Twitter. I’ll second that. It’s interesting how we can look at a picture and assume thing about voices. I wasn’t expecting your voice to be so deep.
Love the podcast. I’m impressed with iTalk. Wouldn’t have known you were recording via your iPhone if you hadn’t told us. Plus, doing it that way makes it easy to record any time the mood/a topic comes to you vs having to be at your computer to record.
A tip to help with post typos, try composing your post in Dreamweaver or other HTML editing software first. They all usually have a spell checker of some sort but will ignore any code you’ve included. It’s certainly cut down on the amount of edits I have to make to my posts after the fact.
Gayla McCord on 01 Mar 2009 at 3:41 pm #
I like the candid shots that are captured by those around you. It’s not just about how you see the world – but how those closest to you see your world that intrigues me. Speaking of you certainly, but also of the blogosphere as a whole. What can I say, I’m a natural G rated voyeur
Bird on 02 Mar 2009 at 6:59 am #
Great podcast. I look forward to hearing more of them.
Carolyn on 04 Mar 2009 at 10:15 pm #
Sooo…many…BLOGS! *collapse* (Happy now, John?! ha ha)
Podcast, you are my new friend.
Carolyn on 04 Mar 2009 at 10:21 pm #
Ps. I work in customer service and therefore dislike people A LOT, but I’m actually quite an annoyingly loving, smiley girl as well. S’all good, Ron.
Viv on 12 Mar 2009 at 11:25 am #
omg.. so I am a bit late on reading your blog nowdays.. ya know.. my day job keeps getting in the way with my web surfing and side projects…
whats great about this post is that it took me back to our high school days, and your voice being so familiar.. but at the same time so much more mature and refined.
loved the organic flow of your thoughts on the podcast, it was almost like being inside your head and getting a sense of how thoughts stream out.
I am looking forward to more!!
John Cabrera on 12 Mar 2009 at 10:24 pm #
Well, better late than never, so I’ll take it! Haha! So cool to hear your thoughts about my voice. I wish I could hear your memory of it. Just so everyone knows, last time I saw Viv, I was a Sophomore in high school. That was 1991!
viv on 19 Mar 2009 at 10:37 pm #
hey now.. no need to talk specific dates!!
it’s funny, to think that we were such different people back then and not knowing what would be of our futures.. and here we are sooo many years later.. the internet has made it possible to find each other again and to catch up.
i should really stop my brain pulling me from so many different directions and focus on finishing all my projects so i can concentrate on my own blog too! and you can steal some of my recipes
