who's John Cabrera?

oh that's right… it's me.

Lost Season 5

How did this start?

Well, I was hanging with @james_gunn earlier this year… actually it was a bunch of the Gunns and several others… and we were all talking about Lost. At a certain point, I took the stage, and over the course of an hour flew this small band of Losties on a magical journey through “nerd”… Seriously… at least two people walked away from the conversation. I remember one person saying, “okay, this has gotten a little too dorky for me” and another later saying, “Is JP still talking about Lost?”

BTW, a lot of my friends call me JP… did you know that? You can call me JP too, if you’d like. Or not. There are plenty of friends who call me both.

Anyway, I laid down my “Lost is Atlantis” Theory going into much of the same detail I have here with you… and by the end of the monologue, the few that still remained (James included) were like, “dude.”

That week, James surprised me with a tweet to his twitter followers saying I had a Lost Theory that needed to be shared. Suddenly, dozens of people were tweeting me to give it up.

I was like… “wow… okay.”

So I shared.

And the response was so overwhelmingly positive, that I shared some more. And the next thing I knew, these Lost posts had become, not only a big part of the writing here at my blog, my proudest writing actually… but a new way to engage with my you, my readers. To really get to know you. Collaborate with you.

Anyway, I thought it might be nice if my last post of the Marathon was an easy list of all my posts this season… along with a small bit of commentary on each.

So let’s do it.

LOST THEORIES PT. 1

The post that started it all. I basically laid out the first part of a theory that The Black Rock was actually on an expedition to find the fabled Island of Atlantis. Little fact that I didn’t include in the post… the ship actually set sail not long after the release of a real book about Atlantis. The book is called Atlantis: The Antidiluvian World, and it was very popular. It inspired many explorers of the day to try to find Atlantis. In fact, most of our modern images of Atlantis come from this book. But I also talked about how Richard could perhaps be one of the crew of The Black Rock… that’s looking less likely now.

LOST THEORIES PT. 2
(HOW MANY TIMES CAN I TYPE THE WORD ‘ANCIENT’?)

This is my big “The Island is Atlantis” post. I’ve had a hunch that this place was Atlantis ever since seeing the statue foot. In this one, I do a bunch of comparisons… including one that uses Plato’s description of Atlantis’ city center. I’m now, since the Finale, ever more resolute in this theory.

AWWWWW… LOST, YOU’RE SO CUTE

JIN IS ALIVE!!!!!!!! Although, I don’t talk about it at all in this post. Truth is, I didn’t like that plot turn. I know everyone wanted it… but I just thought it cheapened his death the season before. I wouldn’t have minded him coming back… but it just felt forced. Anyway, instead, I talked about the moment where Sawyer saw Claire give birth. And, of course, Juliette shooting at the people in the canoe. They still haven’t resolved that, btw. Are we gonna see it next season? Also, it’s funny, I said in this post that I didn’t want my blog getting too Lost heavy… lol… well that went out the window.

LOST “IN WATER”

If the revelation of Jin’s survival wasn’t lame enough, the way they had him explain how he survived… *sigh*

LOST FOR WORDS

Oh man, *sigh* this has got to be the most embarrassing post in the bunch. This was only a few posts in, and I guess I was starting to get cocky. I wasn’t crazy about the episode itself, so I decided to lay out a very elaborate theory explaining how Baby Aaron and Desmond’s Baby Charlie were going to grow up to be Charlie and his older brother from Drive Shaft…. except there was one thing I totally overlooked. Charlie’s brother’s name was Liam, not Aaron. It was pointed out about a minute after I posted it, and I ended up putting a delete line through almost every word in it…… which actually made the post look pretty cool. But man… what a doozy.

LOST WITH MY LEFT FOOT ON RED

HA HA HA, get it… left foot of the statue… on red… as in the game Twister… as in the episode was confusing………… yeah.

HENRY GALE OR BEN LINUS?: A LIST OF THE GOOD AND EVIL

I went through this phase where I kept hearing people hating on Ben. I never got their dislike for the character. So I decided to make a list of everything he did I thought was totally Evil and everything I thought was Good….. for a while, Evil was winning handedly… but I continued to revise it, and now they’re pretty even. Although, I suppose I should revise it some more.

THAT THAR STATUE BE EGYPTIAN

This was my most popular post for a very long time. It still gets a lot of traffic. But nothing of substance really… it’s mostly just people wanting to look at the picture. My favorite part of this post isn’t in the post itself, though… it’s in the comments. @paulinehess, a frequent commenter here, laid out a killer theory for who the statue was. It ended up being wrong, but it set everyone’s imaginations on fire… and it led me to revise the post itself.

LOST COMMUNE

A lot of what confused me at this point in the season has now been explained… but why Ben, Sun, and Lapidus landed in 2007 is still a mystery to me. Did Jacob just flat out choose who should be blipped to 1977? Did Anti-Jacob choose? I’m trying to figure something out in this post… I don’t know what. But I do talk a bit about the Ghost Door that opened behind Sun… and what looks like Claire in the shadows behind her. I’m not sure how it fits together with the new revelations of Jacob… but it does.

…NEB and BEN…

These two posts were published at the same time. I posted …Neb first so that it would be below Ben… on the page. Basically, at this point in the season, I had two possibilities for what was going on. So I decided to lay out both. Since one of them deals with a Parallel Universe, I thought it would be fun to format the posts almost identical to each other… only I’d change the facts in each. My stance now is that Parallel/Alternate Universes DO exist in this story. We’ll see next season if I’m right.

LOST OVERSEAS

This is the first of two posts I did while I was visiting Germany last month. In it, I continue pounding my “Parallel Universe Theory”. It’s the first episode where our Abbott and Costello are trying to figure out how all of this Time Travel stuff works. Miles has held firm (even in the Finale) that there’s no changing things… while Hurley, on the other hand, just hopes he doesn’t disappear a la Back to the Future. I think we began to love these two as a team in this episode.

LOST… NOW WITH MORE HIEROGLYPHS

Awwwww YEAH!!!! Loved this episode. Could have done without the memory tornato there at the end, but loved them glyphs. Actually it was while I was in Germany that I decided to ask @edrafalko to help translate the glyphs when I returned.

PREVIOUSLY ON LEUNG

Probably one of my favorite episodes in the entire series. That’s all I have to say.

INTERVIEW WITH A SPHINX: DECIPHERING LOST’S HIEROGLYPHS

Okay, confession… I exaggerated a bit with the ‘teh’s. But he does do it a lot. Anyway, this was the first part of a Twitter style post, deciphering the hieroglyphs in the Temple. There was a really fascinating follow up comment by JR Tschopp……. well, fascinating in that it supports my Atlantis theory. Hehe.

I GOTT… I DON’T KNOW… LOST?

Another attempt at a clever title. If you’ve read that issue of Wired Magazine we saw sitting on Faraday’s couch, then you know “Gott” is a theory for time travel. Interesting, huh? And I still believe that’s not just a hoax in the ocean.

INTERVIEW WITH A SPHINX: DECIPHERING LOST’S HIEROGLYPHS PT. 2

I actually didn’t exagerate the ‘teh’s in this one.

FOLLOW A COMPASS WHEN YOU’RE LOST

In this one, I attempt to explain what the “healing factor” actually is by using the extraordinary history of Locke’s compass. In simple terms, that compass must continue to be “healed” or else it will eventually deteriorate. If it’s stuck in a time loop then… oh hell… just read the post.

JAC, CHRISTIAN SHEPHERD

This was the first day of my Lost Marathon Week, which started last Sunday. Even though much of this theory has been shattered to bits… this was my favorite post to write. It also sets up my newest theory for who Jacob may be.

MOVING THROUGH THE LOST UNIVERSE

Every Monday at my blog I do a post dedicated to physical movement. I grew up with a lot of dance around me, since my sister is a Contemporary Dancer. I like bringing that element of myself into this blog. Since this was Lost week, I figured the obvious subject should be Lost’s approach to physical movement… which, as you know, is a bit scrambled through Time and Space. Here, I attempt to break down some basics for how characters may be moving through time and space. Beware, this is a very nerdtacular post. You may need your pocket protector and scientific calculator for this one.

SKETCHY TEMPLE GLYPHS

I tried to help Ed translate the Temple glyphs for a 3rd installment of my Interview with a Sphinx series. I began drawing out the glyphs myself, using all the screen caps I had available.

HYPOCRITICAL HIEROGLYPHICAL
(SAY THAT 10 TIMES REAL FAST)

I was so hoping to get a Part 3 to that Temple glyphs posts. It just didn’t happen. So instead I decided to just transcribe them myself. I used several sites, including Lostpedia, to put together my own interpretation. A day after it posted, I got a comment from kansasgal71 who seemed a little hurt by my Lostpedia.com comments. She’s an avid member there, as well as a reader here. I felt really bad, and I tried to explain what I meant in a reply to her. I also amended a part of the post, giving credit to the guy responsible for most of the glyph translations at Lostpedia.

THIS LOST POST LIES IN THE SHADOW OF THE STATUE

My Post-Finale post. I got this sucker up earlier than I’d ever gotten a post up. And in it, I throw out a piece of supporting evidence for my newest Jacob theory. I will say, it took me a while to get that screen cap of Mark Pellegrino with his mouth open. I used the pic they have on Lostpedia for Raymond Shepherd… but I needed to show those teeth.

LOST CIVILIZATION OF VIRACOCHA

And my second to last post this season was a podcast. In it, I actually circle back around to my Atlantis Theory… as I said, the theory that started this whole series of posts… and I end it with the beginnings of my newest theory… one that I’m sure you’ll hear more about in future posts.

And then of course there’s this one. This final post of the season is an easy way to revisit posts from the past. Think of it as a big donkey wheel here at johncabrera.com. I know some of you have asked for an easier way to find past Lost posts. So now all you have to do is type “Lost Season 5″ in the search. I hope this helps.

My plan is to throw out the occasional Lost post during the summer. But only if something really hits me. Mostly, I’ll be blogging about other interests… although, I’m sure some will have a Lost flavor. It’s just how I roll.

I have a feeling I’ll be blogging about another show, though. Can any of you guess what it might be?? I’ve dropped some clues.

I hope you’ll all stick around.

  1. Hi JP!

First, I want to say that I doubt any of your tweeps will be saying, “Thank God” [this is your final Lost post of the season]. I’m sure many have enjoyed all of them, and maybe some others haven’t bothered to read them, therefore don’t mind any of the posts.

I’ve glanced through most every one, as you post them. However, I’ve never commented, because unfortunately I’ve never been able to view the show. The few times I would have been able to, was too many seasons, and shows, in – and I really didn’t want to start in the middle to end, knowing I’d… well… be lost.

I think it’s really cool that James (@james_gunn) told his Twitter followers that you had Lost theories well worth sharing, and hence, this all began!

Even though I may not comment (only because I wouldn’t have anything to contribute), I still enjoy checking out your posts and I just felt I should finally let you know, especially after reading your one tweet AND your intro here!

About the next show you feel you may start blogging about next… hmm?… Something to do with Atlantis? – Just a quick, last minute, guess. I’m too tired to read through again right now to really try to figure it out… and Atlantis seemed to come up a lot within, but I’m unaware of any shows about Atlantis, other than Stargate Atlantis sounding familiar.

Anyway, bed time! Sorry for the length of this comment… I wrote a lot more than I expected to! Looking forward to more! :)

  2. Loved reading your posts John, thanks for all your work…Hey is the show Dexter? Love that show too.
Totally getting on board for the Jacob is “Ray” or aka Jacks grandfather…Loved the finale, was totally in tears for the Juliet scene. I think it would be awesome if they were back on the plane or airport together and all had like ‘DeJaVu’ of knowing each other, especially the main characters. I’m stilling hoping for a Claire/Jack we’re related scene. Do you watch ‘Fringe’ that’s got some awesome ideas on Parallel universes, maybe you blog on that, although it just finished too!!! Thanks again :)

  3. Thanks for making this post with all the others in order. It will make it easier for me to catch up with the ones I missed before.

  4. Is Stargate Atlantis on the air this summer? That would be my guess.

  5. Wow, it’s so weird how all your Lost posts just evolved naturally. I still remember the first one and how James Gunn was pimping it on Twitter and FB, also, finally we know your nickname, cause I don’t know man, calling you J didn’t totally convinced me, and John is too long, lol. So JP it is, and do tell us, why the P? is it cause of your middle name? what is it?

It’s nothing new that we all enjoy and love your posts, cause really, you’ve gotten my mind all riled up with new theories, and that’s pretty cool. Also I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one that feels that way.

And my guess on the show you’ll be writing about, mmm maybe your webseries? right? right? or maybe not haha.

  6. LOST is one of my favorite shows. It’s definitely my favorite show that I hardly ever know what’s going on during. As that LOST logo comes up at the end with the ominous “bong” I am generally sitting on my couch with a confused look and a “WTF did THAT mean?” on my lips. Your blogs became my cliff notes and I really looked forward to them and enjoyed them. Oh yeah, and for the record, I was really hoping your Jac/Jacob theory was true….

Can’t wait til next season. (2010? WTF?)

  7. It IS Chuck isn’t it? I don’t get ‘that channel’ so I’ll be out of the loop. Oh well… I can still read it and not feel the need to pester with my wacky idears.

Thanks again for a fun ride on your blog. Feels like the last day of school of junior year. We have a whole summer of anticipation for the final year of Lost. Feels good and sad at the same time.

  8. As opposed to a donkey wheel, I like to think of your Lost blogs as a great big donkey punch. But that’s just me.

Thanks for doing these, JP (yes, I’m one of the folks who calls him only that); they’ve been awesome. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next year.

And now I’m dying for 2010 to get here! Nearly a year without Lost?! Shit!

  9. Well, I’m one of those readers who came via James Gunn’s tweets, and I just wanted to say that I’ve been *loving* your Lost posts. I rarely comment. because I rarely feel I have anything to add to the conversation, but I don’t feel that my Lost viewing experience is complete until I’ve read your posts!

So anyway, keep up the good work, and I’ll be looking forward to next season (as well as whatever else you post in the meantime). :)

  10. I cannot believe this season is already over and next season is the last. My heart skips a beat at the thought of LOST being over. Yet I cannot pretend not to be happy about finally getting all the answers. What are the chances of another TV Show puzzle to fill in where Lost will leave us?

As I said previously, not upset. I am actually more active on The Fuselage than Lostpedia. Yet I have found wonderful Lost friends all over the web.

Glad you are one of them JC.

  11. No P, it’s not Chuck… and Itzel, I can’t blog about my own series!! lol.

James, thank you again… especially for that eloquent comparison.

  12. I’ve really enjoyed all of your Lost posts, even the times when I disagreed with some of your theories, and I’m very glad that you didn’t stick with your original idea of not wanting your blog to get to Lost-heavy.

As for the next show you’re looking forward to, I have a feeling that it might tie in with your Monday posts a little bit better than Lost does. I’m guessing it’s So You Think You Can Dance, my favorite summer show (which premieres this Thursday). Yes? :)

  13. V…….. yes.

You may enjoy tomorrow’s MM post. ;)

  14. Caryl and Katelynne, lol. Is Stargate Atlantis even on the air anymore?? Caryl thank you for the really kind words, btw. I’m glad you did comment. But why not catch up on Lost? Rent the pilot. After you watch it, I promise, you’ll be hooked and totally caught up in about a month of marathon viewing.

  15. Okay… so you’ve done it. I will watch “So you think you can dance…” I haven’t before but after becoming an avid viewer of that MTV show Taking the Stage and having it remind me how much I loved Modern Dance when I was a kid, watching it on Fame and taking dance lessons… (thank you Leroy Johnson!) I decided that I MIGHT look at SYTYCD.

This would be another good reason. Thanks.

  16. JP, but maybe you should blog about your webseries? lol, well a girl can dream right? I’m really curious about this project, hopefully you’ll keep us updated and tell us more about it :D

  17. JP: “Caryl and Katelynne, lol. Is Stargate Atlantis even on the air anymore??”

hahaha! Well, I couldn’t think of another show with “Atlantis” in the title, and that wasn’t really my guess… just mentioned it sounded familiar! Thanks for lol at me! ;)

And, thank you for making me feel so welcome with my commenting! Another reason I’ve refrained before is because I kind of felt intrusive, even though James recommended I follow you. I feel that way about anyone I follow after a recommendation. But, I’m getting over it now. Especially after your very nice reply to me here! :)

  18. Oh! About catching up on Lost, I just might do that… if I can find a MONTH to spare, lol!

Seriously, I’ve thought about renting past episodes. We’ll see! If it doesn’t air again until 2010, seems like I have a reasonable amount of time to catch up on all :)

  19. Itz, I am planning to put up a post with some tid bits about the project.

  20. Caryl, I was half joking about the month of viewing… but seriously, 8 months is plenty of time. My point is, once you start the pilot, you’ll be hooked so bad, you’ll look for every opportunity to watch more. Watching on DVD is such a different experience than watching on TV. In a lot of ways better, I think.

  21. Hey JP!

Glad I checked back, to catch your reply! You didn’t need to explain. I knew exactly what you meant and caught the humorous tone too! I was just kidding back!

And, that’s part of what I’m worried about – becoming hooked so bad – that I’ll neglect important other things, lol. I’ve been wanting to see Lost for a long time now, and have wavered between starting the series OR a few other shows first/instead- but, I think you’ve convinced me that Lost is the next show to watch. Thanks! :)
