H + Me = Update

Okay, so it’s long overdue isn’t it? A little update of what I’ve been working on these past few months. A little one though. I’m very superstitious so I try to steer clear of jinxes as much as possible.

So some of you probably know by now that I’m working on a writing project for Warner. If you don’t know… I’m working on a writing project for Warner. More specifically, the digital arm of Warner Brothers, Warner Premier, responsible for creating content for iTunes and other digital platforms.

What is the project? Well, that’s not altogether easy to explain, so I’ll just give you some of the facts. A lot of this stuff is already common knowledge… but a few bits are exclusive newbies. So here we go:

To Mine

Okay, so this is what I remember.

Monday night… it was me, Val, Sean, and Lee (and I think Eddie… I’m gonna have to verify that later and do an update).

Lee and I were roommates at the time, and the four(five) of us were hanging downstairs in the living room drinking whiskey and joking the hell out of our miserable lives (except Sean… he was already a cast member on a little show called Gilmore Girls… we all thought he was famous).

I’m not sure why the memory comes with such a clear image of the nasty garbage strewn state of the apartment. Maybe cause I still live there, and these days it looks very different. We had a wicker lounge chair that had been peed on by our cat, a southwest style coffee table we found on the street, and this ridiculously long black pleather couch. There were two pieces of art on the walls. A super cheap “cabin on a landscape” print, and an 11 x 14 blank canvas that we thought was ironic.

At around 4:30am I stumbled upstairs to my room while the others powered through.

The next thing I remember was Lee at my bedroom door.

“Dude! Wake up! You need to come downstairs! There’s some crazy terrorist shit going on!”

Mr. Clooney & the Newseum

Photobucket

Fun fact about me: I have one degree separating me and George Clooney: his dad, Nick. During my last semester, I had Nick as a professor for a course called “Movies that Changed Us,” which is the same title of his book. Pretty much every week we discussed a movie and how it changed the film industry. Saw some classic movies that I’ve never seen before… “Taxi Driver,” “The Graduate,” and “Birth of a Nation” to name a few.

Chi-Dynasty

So I’m about to wander out into my second day of Chi-Town.

To catch some of you up, I used to live in Chicago. I went to school here in the early-mid ninties and stuck around for four years afterwards doing theater, helping to found an arts collective/theater company, learning to drive a cab (true).

But in 2000 I left the city in sort of a rush. Our comapny had just finished a very exciting run of Jessica Goldberg’s Refuge, one I’d been asked to stay months past my original LA moving date to be in. Throughout that summer I’d been sleeping on people’s couches and living out of a small suitcase.

I also didn’t have much money for the upcoming move so there were four boxes of my things that I simply couldn’t ship. So I asked my buddy Mark if he would store those boxes in his garage for a little bit until I could send him some money to ship them.

I hope at this point you know where the story is going. After nearly a decade (and admittedly about 4 trips back for business over the years) I have finally come to get those things, and to visit some of my closest friends here (I’m actually starting the day later than I hoped because of all the visiting last night).

Anyway, I’m going to open the boxes today at around 6pm Chicago time. What should I expect to find in those boxes? Honestly… I don’t remember. But you can bet I’ll be posting pictures on my tumblr – meme.johncabrera.com.
