Youuuuuurr Results

Look, I’m not surprised that Ade went home. Honestly, he wasn’t that great last night… and say what you will about Evan, he really wasn’t horrible… or at least he didn’t drop any of his props. Bottom line: his fanbase is friggin enormous. In order for Ade to have stayed he needed to do something extraordinarily awesome and/or strange… like, I don’t know, maybe dance a contemporary solo to O Fortuna naked.

What I am surprised about is Kayla. I was SURE she was going tonight. I think she’s a great dancer, don’t get me wrong… she’s just been systematically placed in the bottom this entire competition… and I really think it’s her stage presence when she’s not dancing that’s doing it.

She always looks so nervous to me… and even in this last episode she seemed to be kind of begging for the win. No? “I’ve worked so hard to get here… you can’t imagine how hard I’ve worked… and I’ve worked even harder on the show.” And has anyone else noticed lately she’s been kind of amping up the “personality” with Cat… which basically means answering Cat very quickly and very loudly?

Not to mention what I call the “you killed my bitch, bitch!” phenomenon. It basically states that when a favorite contestant is voted off in a surprise, the fans of that contestant typically build resentment for the other bottom contestant who made it through. And the next week, they end up sending them home too, as if to say, “Thought you could get away with that, didn’t you, Chica?!!! Chica rubia!!!”

Ah well, personally, I think it’s the oddest final four to date. But I have NO idea what’s going to happen… so that’s good. Now I kinda want to see Evan win… just cause it would be so silly and weird. And at this point, I need something in this competition to wake me up.

We Lost A Good One

*sigh*

I’d like us to observe one minute of silence, please, for our fallen Janette.

Thank you.

Did you think Katie Holmes did a good job last night? Honestly? I didn’t. And when I post something like what I’m about to say, I always imagine: what if I were to work with this person in the future, and they asked me about this post? And in this case, I think I would say, “Katie, listen… at this stage of the competition, that just wasn’t good enough. When a dancer on this show gives a poor performance, we discuss that fact… and we discuss why it was poor. It’s one of the things that makes for good TV. This is one of my favorite shows too, Katie. I, myself, know how to do a really mean “robot”… but no charity in the world should put me on that stage…. unless it was a comedy routine… even then.”

On a show that spotlights some of the most gifted dancers in America, for this dance to be set up as the “performance of a lifetime” is frankly a little odd. And I was really excited to watch it. As manipulative as this show can be… I actually thought she’d surprise us.

And was that REALLY for the benefit of the Dizzy Feet Foundation? Why? Because watching Katie Holmes dancing will make us want to donate? Will make us more aware of it? Hmmm… I guess we all wached it so maybe it worked.

But I’ll tell you what I would have loved to see… and I think it would have been WAY bigger publicity for Dizzy Feet: if after her dance, Cat had made a little comment like, “Com’ere you sexy set of legs”, then brought her over to the Judges, and they had gone down the line and technically critiqued her performance. I’d have been like, “wow, that’s cool… Katie’s really laying her self on the line for this Foundation…… perhaps I should be more aware of it.”

Okay, I’m probably making more out of this than I should, but… well………. I’m REALLY pissed that Janette went home!!!!

FDL Results Coming Soon

Hey guys, I’m writing this quick post to let you know that the FDL results are coming soon… as well as some of my thoughts on last night’s show.

Right now I’m with the dogs at Cosimo’s place, sans my computer to do the flash app update. I learned early in this dog sitting adventure that I have to spend my nights here with these dogs. Partly cause of my own guilt if I leave them alone, and partly cause… well… look at them. They’re pretty cute.

-

They also like to cause havoc when I’m not around. Man, dogs are manipulative. They know exactly how to get what they want, don’t they? I wonder if these dogs could get a movie made… if the incentive was right.

Anyway, results coming after the sun rises… but I’m gonna sleep in… so later than the sun rise.

Crazy show though, right? I’ll probably say this again in my next post… but I’m shocked that Kayla didn’t go home. And I’m crushed that Janette did.

EDTSCD

What a strange episode. So much blah. A Starlight Express themed group number. Three duets in a row that were like a quarter the tempo as usual. A very special airing of The Ellen Show.

It definitely got better during the second half… but still… wasn’t for me.

My favorite piece from tonight was Ade and Melissa’s contemporary duet. I mean, of course it was. It was beautiful. Check it:

Question: To those who don’t watch the show, did know what it was about?

Answer: It was about a woman struggling with Breast Cancer.

I guess I’m wondering, though, if it would have been as moving without any reference to cancer. If she hadn’t been wearing the scarf, and Tyce hadn’t told us beforehand that it was about breast cancer… would the movement alone have evoked such a response from the viewers.

I imagine it would have still stood out as one of the best pieces this season. It was a really stunning and inspired work of dance and choreography, that’s for sure… but I don’t think it would have gone down as one of the best dances in the history of the show… as was indicated by the judges.

But maybe that’s okay. Maybe an important element of dance, like other forms of art, is context,… and sometimes we need to have that set up for us.

But I’m wondering if it would have been even more moving had we not been told in the rehearsal footage that it was going to be about breast cancer. If we’d just seen her wearing the scarf, would we have gotten it? And if so, would the realization, the surprise, have hit us even deeper?

I guess we can’t know for sure.

What do you guys think? Would you have gotten the cancer context with just the scarf and costumes? Could you have gotten it if the costumes were totally neutral and nothing was said?

One things for sure, below was my least favorite performance of the night.
