How to Rock a Pinch Roll

It’s 1987. You’re walking through the halls of your middle school, high school, technical college. You’re nodding to fellow students standing at their lockers. You’re working it.

You’re looking good. You’re feeling good. Cause even though your parents (or your spouse) wouldn’t let you get that pair of skinny ankled Guess jeans you wanted so badly… you’ve fashioned a brilliant plan to show them.

With just a few folds of the cuffs, you’ve got that pair of Lee jeans rocking The Pinch Roll. You’re rocking it out.

Only something is a little off. Those fellow students? They aren’t nodding back. Some of them… are laughing?! And that’s when you notice. You’ve been walking around for god knows how long with one of your Rolls completely fallen.

What the hell happened? And how could it have been prevented?

The following tutorial is a step by step guide to one of the cheapest fashion trends of the 80s.

Project Announcement

Okay… I know I’ve been promising it for a while…

So I’m excited to finally announce… my writing partner, Cosimo De Tommaso, and I just reached a deal to develop a new web series. Some of you have heard me mention bits about it over the past few months. I’d been hoping to make the official announcement sooner, but contracts have been a long process.

And while I can’t say too much more than that right now, there will be a lot of hints in the coming months. So stay tuned.

If you have a Twitter account, follow my updates @johncabrera and Cosimo’s @cosimo179, and you’ll probably be first to know about any project details.

As for my site redesigns, things are moving slowly but surely… now it’s looking like I won’t have a new unboiled site for at least another month. In the meantime, you can check out some of my films on my vimeo profile or here on this blog.

More Crazy

So here’s Crazy Love. This film was made during a 48 hour film competition I participated in years ago called Instant Films. It’s a really charming little movie, written by Jenelle Riley, and it turned out to be one of the best film experiences I’ve had.

Here is how the competition worked: She and a group of writers had 8 hours to write their scripts (from a Friday evening until the next morning). Then I and a group of directors were randomly paired with the scripts, and we literally chose our actors out of a hat. We then had 36 hours to return with a finished film.

I stumbled in with my master tape about 10 minutes before the deadline. An hour later I was sitting in a theater with about 300 people watching all the films. I was so tired I fell asleep.

But we ended up winning the competition, and the film went on to play at a couple festivals… it even garnered a Critics Pick at Palm Springs International Short Film Festival.

Anyway, if you haven’t already watched it… enjoy.
